On the Future of an Ageing Population. We have brought together expertise from a wide spectrum of disciplines including demography, economics, design and technology, social and health policy, geography and gerontology. We have gathered the best available evidence to understand what the ageing of the UK population means both now and in the future. Spending on health care services for the elderly has been increasing since 1965; between 1977 and 1984 it increased at an annual rate of 14.5 percent (Waldo and Lazen, 1984).
